Fortnite Season 5 – How to Fix Crashes and a Black Screen While Playing

Fortnite Season 5 brings a lot of updates, but also a series of issues.

While the game is fine for many people, there are a small number who may experience a “black screen” that crashes when the game loads.

There are several reasons for this problem – from the wrong graphics driver (not possible) to issues within Fortnite itself.

For the most part, the black screen crash problem seems to be caused by the way in which the new update leads to many files being damaged or corrupted – which prevents the operating system from loading the files. which it needs to run the game.

Reasons

As with many software applications, there are many *potential* causes of the problem (in the absence of a specific error code, it is often the case that multiple issues can cause the problem).

To this end, while BattlEye and faulty movie files are the most likely cause, the following represent the full list of issues:

  • BattlEye is wrong

  • Wrong movie files (Season 5 only)

  • Graphics driver problems

  • Windows out of date/errors

  • Fortnite errors

  • Windows registry problems

It’s important to remember that “black screen” crashes usually indicate graphics problems. This is the same across the spectrum of modern computing.

If you can’t get Fortnite to work after using the steps below, there may be more specific issues with Windows, or the game itself.

SOLUTIONS

To solve the underlying issues, there are several steps that need to be taken…

1. Uninstall BattlEye

The first step to follow is to remove the BattlEye extension for the Fortnite game.

BattlEye is a third-party “anti-cheat” package used by Fortnite, PUBG (and others) to provide additional support for the system. This is important, but we can just fix the installation to make sure it doesn’t cause any more errors:

  • Press the “Windows” + “E” keys on your keyboard

  • Browse to “C:/Program Files/Epic Games/Fortnite/FortniteGame/Binaries/Win64/BattlEye”

  • Select “Uninstall_battlEye.bat” and the screen will process the command

  • Once complete, load the Epic Games Launcher

  • Select the “cog” icon to the left of the green “Launch” button

  • From the drop down, select “Verify”

  • Let the verification process run

  • After it completes, restart your system

Upon restarting, you should try to load Fortnite again.

If it works, you should consider the problem solved.

If not…

2. Remove Faulty Movie Files

This is a newly discovered patch by someone on the Epic Games forums – it seems that many Fortnite “movie” files are actually damaged or corrupted.

To do this, you can follow the steps here:

  • Press the “Windows” + “E” keys on your keyboard

  • Browse to “C:/Program Files/Epic Games/Fortnite/FortniteGame/Content/Movies/SRT”

  • Remove everything in that folder

  • Next, go back to the “movies” folder

  • Find the 3 “FNBR” movie files and extract them all

  • From here, reload the “Epic Games Launcher” and bring up the “Verify” process.

If it works, the issue will be considered resolved.

3. Reinstall the Graphics Driver

The next step (if the above two don’t work) is to install your graphics driver.

It might sound extreme, but it’s actually pretty straight-forward – and should solve most problems about any games that cause problems.

Doing this takes a little time, but it’s worth it:

  • First, browse to your preferred search engine + search for “DDU”

  • You should find a website called Guru3D that mentions the “Display Driver Uninstaller” it does.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and download the application through one of the links

  • Save the file to your system (you will need it after restarting)

Once you have downloaded, you need to load Windows in “Safe Mode”.

This varies depending on which version of Windows you’re running:

  • on Windows 7, restart the system and always press F8 before Windows loads. A black screen should appear – use the number keys on the keyboard to select “Safe Mode”

  • on Windows 10press “Start”, select the “Power” button (left in the “charms” menu) and then hold SHIFT and press “Restart”

  • This will load a blue screen of “Windows Recovery Environment”, where you need to click “Troubleshoot”> “Advanced Options”> “Startup Settings”> “Restart”

  • This will restart W10 into Safe Mode (yes, it’s annoying but that’s how it works)

Once in “Safe Mode” (on any system), you need to click on the DDU application you downloaded earlier…

  • Load the application, you need to press the long button, do its work and then restart your system.

  • From here, you need to allow Windows to reinstall the graphics driver (or if you want to use the full driver, you want to go to the manufacturer’s website and download it)

  • Allow the driver to install, restart your PC and then try to load Fortnite again

4. Updating Fortnite

Next (if the problem persists), you need to update Fortnite.

This guarantees a new set of files for the system, allowing you to get the most out of the game.

To make sure it works properly, you must follow these steps:

  • Load “Epic Games Launcher”

  • Select the “Settings” option from the top right

  • Click on “Update”

  • Run the application in its update process

  • After the update is complete, restart your system

5. Registry Cleaning

Finally, you can clean the “registry” of your system.

It has become popular in recent times (due to the over-promotion of “registry cleaner” tools) – but is still an effective way to fix basic Windows problems.

  • Download an effective registry cleaner tool (the only one worth using in 2018 is CCleaner – which is free)

  • Run the cleaner and it will scan all your system files/settings

  • If it shows the files you want to clean, let them clean

  • Restart your PC when done

This will give you the best chance of having a system that can actually run the Fortnite application smoothly and efficiently. Additional issues suggest a deeper problem.

If you are still experiencing problems, it usually means that you have an underlying problem with the core of your system. Without direct access to the various files/packages that may be causing the error to persist, it’s hard to guess what the problem is.

For this, if you want to solve the issue directly, you may be better off asking for support from several parties who have specific knowledge of your system.

Reddit is a good source of support, as are SuperUser and Microsoft Answers. If you’re having trouble, it might be worth talking to someone on Fiverr (which has a lot of “paid” support for this kind of thing), as well as looking for any support service (local or remote) that may be possible. to get to the heart of the issue.
