Guitar Practicing – Best Practice Tips

Of course, playing the guitar is fun, relaxing, satisfying and a great way to spend an evening with friends. But the truth is that to get good at the guitar, like anything else, you need to spend some time practicing.

For some, the term “practice” conjures up visions of hard labor and self-imposed imprisonment. And it is this way of thinking that leads many new guitar students to failure. But just by changing their view of practice to a more positive slant, most students can transform practice from a mind-numbing, boring task into an exciting world of new discovery.

One way to achieve this is to divide your training time into segments. Dedicating a little time to each practice segment to compensate for boredom and/or burnout. A guitar student can divide practice time into three different segments. One for learning new material, one for reviewing past material, and one for “scribble” time.

New material

As an aspiring guitarist, you should always be hungry to learn new things on the guitar. It could be a new scale, chord progression, riff, or song. Introducing new material to the guitar keeps things “fresh” and creates a level of anticipation every time you pick it up. However, there is such a thing as “too much new information”. Take the new material in sips, not gulps. Give the smaller pieces time to digest before trying to cram too much in there. You’ll make a lot more progress on the guitar by letting small chunks of new information slowly take root in your playing style than by trying to cram it in all at once.

View previous materials

When you learn a new guitar piece or concept, quite often it’s very clear in your mind when you first learn it. You can sit there and play it over and over without a problem. But then you come back the next day and can’t remember anything about it! It happens to everyone. That’s why devoting some of your practice time to revisiting past lessons or songs will be one of the most productive uses of your time possible.

Doodle Time

It can be amazing what happens when you just sit and “scratch” on the guitar. Doodle time involves throwing out all the rules, turning off your inner “editor” and just “messing” with whatever comes out of your fingers.

Call this a “groove” for the guitar. Nothing is right or wrong, no matter what you play. Just let your mind run freely and don’t “over think” anything. Some of the best songs and pieces of music have been written as a result of the composer allowing himself to “float” on his instrument without worrying about where it will land.

Whether you have 3 hours to devote to practice or just 15 minutes – try splitting your allotted time into these three segments and see how much more you’ll improve on the guitar…and how much more fun you’ll have!

A special place for practice

It would be great if we all had a separate room in the house that could be considered our “music” room. A place where we can go and shut out the world while we get lost on the fretboard. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and may not go down well with the rest of the family! One solution is to try to agree on a special place, somewhere in the house, where you can go to practice.

It could be an office or bedroom corner, bonus room, utility room, garage or closet! Anywhere where you can periodically take a few minutes and be alone without distractions.

“Do not disturb”

Try to reach an understanding with family members that when you close the door to your exercise area, you will not be disturbed for anything other than an emergency. Turn off your cell phone, email, and TV. Create a quiet atmosphere where you can fully focus on playing the guitar.

Practice “Tools”

In addition to your guitar, it’s also a good idea to keep some other items nearby that you might need during practice. If you’re taking online classes, then you obviously want to be close to your computer. Make sure your guitar tuner is nearby, as well as a metronome and a few guitars. It’s a good idea to create a notebook to record highlights of the lessons and always have it handy. Try to keep all of these items close to your guitar “workstation” so you don’t have to interrupt your practice time chasing them down.

It is also important to be comfortable while exercising. Try to sit in a chair with no or “low profile” arms that won’t get in the way of the guitar. Wear the most relaxed clothing possible. You can get more done during a workout in sweatpants and a t-shirt or your flannel “jams” than in a stiff three-piece suit. I know I do!

The key to good and productive practice is to dedicate your time to different elements of practice, to set aside space for undisturbed practice, and to dedicate your mind to focused practice time. By doing this, you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish with the guitar, even with limited time to devote to practice.
