It’s not easy for a plus-size woman to live in our quick-fix, slimming, media-obsessed, diet-obsessed society. Most overweight women find themselves locked in a private body war, playing body comparison games with every girl they see. Pretty sure they got the short end of the stick, they feel miserable. This manifests in food and weight obsessions, “the moodiness”, feeling overwhelmed by mental and/or physical clutter, “doormat syndrome”, avoidance of social activities, fear of intimacy, low sex drive, trust issues, avoidance of risk, and a general lack of confidence, not to mention how it undermines the very foundation of the entire family.

With their body image in tatters and their self-image worn to shreds, many accomplished and powerful women suffer in silence, resenting their mirrors, dreading their scales, and hating their bodies, wishing they were thinner. Research shows that nearly 4 out of 5 American women today say they hate their bodies. That’s 80% of the female population in the entire United States. Are you one of them? 60 Minute Self-Image Makeover – Lifetime Reality TV Show, How To Look Good Naked

Good news, America! Lifetime TV has an amazing hit reality series called How to Look Good Naked (HTLGN) Originally created in the UK, it became a hit and came to the US. Enter Carson Kressley, an openly gay man who is a professional stylist and fashion designer to the stars. He’s a former co-host of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and an actor whose delightfully playful attitude and approach to empowering women and teaching them to love their bodies makes him the perfect host for Lifetime’s new show Take it from me, girl. It’s a 60-minute self-image makeover guaranteed to make you tingle inside because it will make you question all the irrational beliefs you have about your body.

It focuses on creating inner transformation by guiding women to see themselves differently and allowing them to let go of their old negative fat and ugly self-images. When I watched the show, I was moved to tears. Feeling inspired to share women’s stories with my readers, I contacted several of the show’s participants (nominees) and asked to interview them.

The plan for the show is that over 5 days each woman learns how to dress to suit her body, find the right base underwear to give her a great shape and do her makeup and hair for maximum impact . Each episode celebrates the transformation with a glamorous Hollywood-style photo shoot where the women not only accept what they see in the mirror, but show it off, naked.

In my opinion, these women are true role models and incredibly brave to be willing to go on national television and share so much of themselves, opening up and exposing their vulnerabilities, letting other women know that they don’t are alone. To inspire and encourage my readers, I’ve included their interviews in my upcoming book, Lovin’ the Skin You’re In. The following is an excerpt from Shannon’s story:

So many sighs over her big, fat thighs – “I was so embarrassed to be seen in a bathing suit.” – Shannon

Shannon Flores is 29 years old. She is a beautiful, plus-sized woman who lives in sunny California with her husband Jeremy and four children, Ryan, Samantha, Caitlin and Kira. Although she had a pool in her backyard before entering HTLGN, she never enjoyed it because she was ashamed to be seen by her husband or neighbors in her bathing suit. After having four children, back to back, she says, “my breasts just sagged. My hips got bigger. My hips got bigger. My ass got bigger. It felt like every part of my body just fell apart and it’s not fun what babies do to your body.”

Keep tightly closed in a box

Like so many other women, as a busy wife and mother, Shannon put everyone else before herself. Hiding behind mom’s oversized, dull, and boring clothes, she refused to spend money on anything new, hoping one day to lose weight. Taunted by her own negative self-talk for years, Shannon tortured herself by focusing on her imperfections. Avoiding mirrors, swimsuits and anything that reveals her curvy body, Shannon admits she’s not as physical with her husband as she’d like to be, saying: “It definitely put a strain on our relationship. And with the lights off, I still felt uncomfortable.” She keeps herself tightly closed in a box. She knew she wasn’t really living and admitted that she was ashamed and disgusted by her body, she didn’t want her husband to really see her naked. So she nominated herself for participation in the show.

The transformation

In our interview, Shannon candidly shared with me, “when they stuck this picture of my body on this truck and asked everybody, ‘What do you see? What do you see? Not one of them said, “You know she’s perfect. She has a model body. Because I don’t have any. But they pointed out the good stuff. Look at her eyes. Look at her skin color. Look at that. Look at that .. And I started to realize that I’m not half bad. My body is bigger than my hips. That’s not the goal that everybody’s looking at.” So I started to realize that I have to start looking at life that way too. I have to start looking at all the positive things, even if they’re small. I just have to point them out and start focusing more on them.”

Shannon now enjoys her pool at least twice a week to swim or sunbathe, saying: “I don’t care. I’m walking in my front yard in my bathing suit. Life is too short to worry about what other people are doing Think of me. After regaining 30 of the 60 pounds she lost on Weight Watchers after the birth of her last child, she says, “I’m pretty good. I feel wonderful. I look good and will not make any more efforts to lose weight. When I asked her what her special advice was for women who are now in the place she was before, she said, “Just be comfortable with who you are right now, right now.”

Here are some fashion tips Shannon shared with me and some goodies from the Looking Good Naked website. Follow these tips if you want to be more curvy and confident at any size:

Be brave – Try everything. If you see something you like, take a chance and try it. You’ll never know what you’re missing if you just stay in the same rut.

Educate yourself – Search for clothes on women with your shape that you admire. Watch shows like “How to Look Good Naked” and “What Not to Wear” to get ideas on how to buy clothes that accentuate and accentuate your body type.

Piece by piece Build a wardrobe of individual clothes. Like renovating a house, shopping is a process. It’s always a work in progress.

Focus on the positive Carson suggested emphasizing a small waist and big hips by wearing fitted jackets that tie around the waist, and for shorter women like Shannon, aim for jackets that only cover the hips or are shorter.

For hourglass figures – Wear a wrap to accentuate your curves, knee high boots and jeans will add length to your body and balance out your curvy hips. To emphasize a small waist, choose fitted shirts with V-necks

For plus size women – Choose monochromatic outfits to create a long, slimming effect. Wear skirts that taper and then flare at the hem to balance you out. Draw attention to the center of your body by wearing bright tops under jackets. Try on clothes of different shapes and colors.

For a bust with Bam! – To complement your curves and create balance, use wide necklines to take the focus away from the bust, high armholes on the jacket to create a more balanced, slimmer silhouette and wear delicate necklaces that end right at the top part of the neckline

For big hands – Wear blouses with an open neckline to flatter the neckline and waist area. Three-quarter length sleeves show only the thinnest part of the arm. Puffer-shoulder jackets facilitate armholes for a roomier fit.

For mature girls – Buy fitted jackets that end just above the widest part of your leg. Wear bright colored tops with beautiful details to draw the eye upwards Avoid jeans with small back pockets that will make your bottom look bigger Wear belts low to give the illusion of a smaller bottom Choose A-line skirts with a natural waist to flatter your figure.
