How to Keep Your Home Warm This Winter?

Winter is fast approaching and you need to prepare your lovely home to fight the plummeting temperature, keeping everyone in the family warm and cozy. Wondering how to keep your home warm this winter without increasing energy bills and being efficient? They are here 10 tips for heating you can easily use to keep your home warm when it starts to get freezing cold outside.

10 effective and efficient heating tips for a cozy winter

Let’s start!

1. Get a programmable thermostat.

Now I know you must have heard this over and over again. This small but clever piece of technology will help you control the temperature in your home with ease. You can set the temperature according to your needs when you are at home, and you can also set a low temperature in the house and leave it for work or vacation. Instead of manually adjusting the temperature multiple times, program the thermostat to do your bidding.

2. Insulate your home.

A good and affordable way to warm your home is to insulate it. You can do this easily and improve the energy efficiency of your home. If your home is poorly insulated or has no insulation at all, there will be significant heat loss. Most of the heat escapes through the ceiling, walls and floor respectively. You will find that the house is much warmer after you insulate these areas, especially the attics.

3. Keep open spaces to a minimum.

Try not to make too many open spaces or too big in your home. Most often, these spaces are not used often or outside, which means that they do not need to be kept warm. Also, these are the areas where heat can easily escape.

But if you already have an open space or two for your home, inspect the area for where the draft is coming from and fix it by properly sealing the cracks. You can also put in new seals for all the doors and windows in these spaces.

Another thing you can do is to separate the living rooms from the bedrooms, thus you can heat certain areas where you need heat the most.

4. Let the sunlight in.

This is the easiest of all heating tips. Just open the windows and let the sunlight warm your home when you are in the house. And in case you are going out or going to work and there is no one in the house, you can simply open the curtains. Sunlight will slowly but steadily heat the rooms even with the windows closed. So, either open the curtains or open all the windows to let the light shine in and warm the rooms.

5. Close the curtains at night.

Speaking of curtains, keeping them closed at night will help trap the heat in the room and prevent it from escaping through the windows. Apart from using solid curtains in winter to do this, you can also get insulated curtains for better results.

6. Switch to reverse fan mode.

You may have heard of this reverse mode or winter setting of ceiling fans. Check if your ceiling fan has one too. And if you have one, why leave the fan idle in the winter when it can help warm the room a bit. When you switch to a winter setting, the fan reverses from a counterclockwise direction, which will spread/push down the hot air trapped in the ceilings. This technique is quite convenient for high or sloping ceilings. Also, be sure to set the fan to low speed, not high speed, otherwise it may cool the hot air.

7. Keep ventilation openings clear of obstructions.

Go around the house and check all heating vents to see if there are things blocking the way, such as furniture or plants.

You may have rearranged the furniture in the summer and placed furniture near or directly in front of the vents. This may have slipped your mind, so double-check these areas to make sure there are no obstructions that could disrupt or even block airflow.

When the return vents are blocked in a forced-air central heating system, you may also have to deal with air pressure issues that cause the heat to fail. Therefore, always keep the vent free for a smooth flow of hot air to warm the rooms.

8. Cover wooden floors.

While wooden floors may not feel too cold on your feet, if they are not insulated, you can lose heat into the room. So yes, even wooden floors should be carpeted to keep rooms warmer. Because carpets and rugs are designed to keep rooms cozy, they are great at retaining heat compared to hardwood floors. As winter approaches, dust off those beautiful rugs and lay them on the wooden floor.

9. Place tinfoil on the back of the radiator.

If you are using a radiator to heat the rooms, put tinfoil on the back of it, it will help reflect the heat back into the rooms instead of letting the hot air rise to the ceiling. You can either use a special reflective radiator foil or simply enjoy the variety of cuisines. Another thing you can do with the radiator is to place a shelf or table above the radiator. (When I say over the radiator, I NO means right above. Never hold anything directly on it!) It will help the uniform flow of heat throughout the room.

10. Use heaters.

A great way to heat spaces is to use space heaters, although it can be a bit risky if you’re not careful. When you need to heat only a certain part of the house, you can use a heater. But when you do, remember not to keep any flammable materials near it and always place it on a stable surface. Do not leave it on overnight or unattended. Get heaters with some convenient features such as automatic turn-off and timed heaters that you can set to turn off after 1 – 4 hours of use.

In addition to using these heating tips, you should also seek out a professional and reliable HVAC technician to inspect your heating system before winter sets in. In this way, you will have a warm and cozy home and office, thanks to the efficient and optimal functioning of your heating system.

I hope these heating tips help you and your family stay warm and comfortable during the frigid winter months. Keep warm.
