Electric RC Helicopter – MAWA010B2 – First Flight Review

I decided to buy our MAWA010B2 in red for myself. We are selling this helicopter at a low price and I wanted to see how they really fly. So I figured I’d get one and then I could do a flight review for my customers.

I received the MAW010B2 (for those who don’t know MAW stands for Model Aircraft Workroom) and it came ready to fly. There was a remote control, an AC adapter, a rechargeable battery (Li-Po) and a proper instruction manual on how to operate this RC. I opened the box and took everything out first. After I took it out I wondered if the blades were broken and tried to straighten them and then wanted to tighten them because they seemed very loose. That’s good, they are loose and can be folded when you go to fly this RC helicopter, you don’t need to tighten these fins and you don’t need to tighten them, they will straighten right up when you slowly push the throttle forward. Like other Chinese made starter helicopters, the instructions are a little hard to understand in parts, they are not written by someone who speaks English as a first language, but you get the point. I didn’t realize how long to charge the helicopter the first time. After the first time you need to charge the helicopter for 2 hours to get really good flight time.

After reading everything and charging the battery until it felt pretty warm, which was about 2 hours, I unplugged the charger and plugged the battery into the helicopter motor. This RC helicopter is nice because you just pull the front plastic part forward by unclipping the top two hooks and charge the battery while it’s still on the helicopter, and when you’re done it takes ten seconds to hook the battery into the helicopter and pull the plastic piece in there. to look The remote needs 8 AA batteries to operate. Once I had them, it was time to test it.

Make sure you pull the antenna all the way up as this type of helicopter only has about a 30 foot range now. Don’t let this helicopter go out of range if it gets too high just go under it and SLOWLY reduce the throttle, never less than half way, and if the helicopter starts to descend, push the throttle up to make the helicopter equalizes. I learned the hard way that if you let it start falling too fast, going full throttle still won’t slow that helicopter down enough and the first thing to break will be the landing skids. Nothing a little superglue, electrical tape and patience can’t fix, but what a pain. So stay under it and never let it fall too fast. The lower rails can be unscrewed and replaced, but I haven’t figured out how to order additional parts for this particular model yet, so if any of you do, I’d love to know.

Here’s another tip. The first time I flew this RC helicopter it was outside and a bit windy, I didn’t notice the wind but my helicopter did. The first time you fly this RC I would suggest either the inside of a gym or just a really wide open parking lot or grass field might even be better. The first thing I did was slowly push the throttle up, cranked the propellers, then as the instructions say pushed it some more to get the chopper off the ground so it wouldn’t tip over and break something. Once it’s in the air though, make sure you back off the throttle a bit so it doesn’t fly too high. My suggestion is to not rush the first three or four flights and just keep it 6 to 8 feet off the ground and practice turning it and making it fly in certain directions. Be patient, that’s why I broke mine, I wasn’t patient and wanted to “See what it could do” which was obviously a mistake.

When you turn on the remote for the first time. First turn on the chopper and the red light will come on which is pretty cool at night, it lights up the front of the chopper which on my red chopper looked good. But then when it is on, turn on the remote with the switch. The red light will flash, then turn off again. Slowly push the throttle all the way down once, you’ll notice it still doesn’t engage the chopper. At the top, full throttle (left trigger), the light will flash very quickly, then go all the way down and the light will stay on all the way, then flash more slowly after a minute. You are now calibrated and ready to fly.

Directly to the right of the left trigger is a slide switch, the further up it slides the more throttle you get in all positions, I put mine 2/3 of the way up. If your helicopter has a hard time getting a little higher (no more than 20 to 30 feet), then increase this. If it climbs too easily, reduce this. If you can’t get up easily, also note that you may have run out of batteries and need to recharge. The right trigger is to turn the helicopter right or left using the rear propeller. It can also be pushed up to give you a forward push, not much but a little movement. Can also be calibrated with all slide switches. I’m not a pro at this yet, so you’ll have to play around with it, but while you are, we recommend low heights.

This chopper can drop from 5 or 6 feet when you mess up just go full throttle right away so the fins don’t hook the ground if it flips over I can imagine that breaking something but I still I haven’t had this problem.

All in all, the MAW010B2 is a great helicopter for beginner to intermediate pilots, ages 12 and up, although I would recommend those under sixteen have an adult and you have to learn the curve slowly. The battery, fully charged, will last 10 – 15 minutes of steady flight. It could charge a little faster, but when it’s ready, you forget about the annoying wait. This is one of the best looking starter models. It has a modern look. I have already received several compliments on it. With proper care and increased flying skills, I am sure that this particular electric RC helicopter will bring you a lot of pleasure over time. To make it last longer, always recharge the battery immediately after flight and then leave it for 5 minutes before flying again to let the motor cool down. This will help prevent the engine from “burning out”. Also, never leave the battery fully uncharged for a long period of time. Storing an uncharged Li-Po battery can cause it to fail to hold a charge and cause the battery to need to be replaced sooner. Batteries aren’t cheap. And always, always fly in an area completely clear of obstacles to reduce the chance of damage when you crash. If you are patient and don’t get out of control, it will last a very long time. This will give you a lot of bang for your buck.
