Problems You Should Expect With Raising Backyard Chickens

Chickens are generally healthy, hardy and happy animals who can also be very friendly to people and each other (and other animals). But, unfortunately, a reality around raising chickens it’s just that chickens are very prone to disease, illness and behavioral problems. It never seems to matter how careful chicken keepers are – health and behavioral problems always seem to arise even with the best of care, and the most attentive service pays off. Basically, the truth is that problems with arise with raising chickens.

Most problems with chickens are very common and generally quite benign. Some require minimal adjustments to solve. Some of the common problems, no matter how careful you are, require an immediate and serious response to avoid losing the entire herd. Here are the most common problems you can expect with chickens and how you can fix them.

  • Predation. This is a very common and heartbreaking problem that every chicken keeper will probably have to deal with at least once in their life. Everything seems to want to eat chickens, from the common hawks and eagles that fly in the sky to the neighbor’s dog. Raccoons, foxes, lynxes, bears, snakes, cats, owls and many other animals are common problems. Securing your chicken coop properly or buying well-made ones chicken coop kits it can dissuade predators from taking chicks while they are in the coop (which is very common). While the chickens are out of the coop being safe chicken runs which is covered will help discourage aerial and daytime predators. If you insist on free-ranging your herd outside the boundaries of a fenced chicken coopprovide plenty of tree cover to quell hawk and eagle attacks, and purchase chicken breeds that do well in the wild and are very predator-oriented.

  • disease. Chickens are just as susceptible to viral, bacterial, parasitic and congenital diseases as any other animal. There are vaccines available to immunize your birds against common but deadly diseases such as Merrick’s disease. You should check with your local consultant or veterinarian if these diseases are common in your area before buying chickens, or if you have birds that are healthy but not vaccinated. Other diseases, such as common viral infections, can manifest in chickens in many ways, and it is usually best to house them, as you would a human, in isolation. Practice the best sanitation you can and don’t be afraid to use products like diatomaceous earth or bird dust. There are medications available for farm use that you can find at feed stores, but always check with a vet first before medicating. Have a quarantine system ready to go at all times, clean and prepared. A dog kennel lined with old but clean towels is a good start. Any sick chicken should be isolated from the flock.

  • Aggression. Roosters are the usual culprit, but sometimes hens can be aggressive towards people and other chickens in the flock. Aggressive hens can be very problematic if they attack people and other hens. These hens can cause more harm than good in the flock and are often difficult to house and may need to be euthanized. Fortunately, aggressive hens are rare. Multiple roosters in a small flock with hens almost guarantees rooster aggression toward each other, toward hens (with aggressive, violent mating behavior), and toward humans. If a rooster is desired, keep one rooster for every 6-10 hens to help quell aggressive inbreeding behavior and reduce his need for competition. If your rooster attacks people, it’s usually a problem that can’t be solved by training or adding hens to breed with and protect. Roosters that are aggressive towards humans should either be rehomed or, as a last resort, euthanized. Sometimes people report that they can retrain an aggressive rooster by picking it up and holding it, which can work. And of course, not all roosters are aggressive towards people.

  • Behavioral problems not necessarily related to aggression. Hens can be neurotic. They do things like cannibalize each other out of simple boredom. They will lay eggs, then turn around and eat the eggs they just laid. They will eat things like paper clips, screws and pieces of plastic. Their pecking order can isolate the chick and prevent it from eating. To avoid these kinds of behavioral problems, make sure your chickens are fully engaged at all times – this doesn’t mean you have to set up a 3-ring circus for your birds, but they should have enough space to move around and explore doing normal. They must be able to dust bathe and scratch on the ground, explore under logs and rocks. They should be able to jump on things. They need a varied diet that is more than just their formulated kibble (but scientifically formulated kibble is excellent for staple feeding and will help prevent cravings for eggs and random junk). Offer simple and fun treats like a head of lettuce, halved watermelon, or even cooked winter squash. Shortbread cookies are great winter treats. Offer plenty of natural perches and rocks for them in their enclosed run or risk-free range.

Raising chickens they can be a great addition to the home garden and are indispensable on the homestead. They offer immense pleasure and seem to simply “fit” into human life. They are funny, cute and beautiful. They offer much more in return for what they are given. Despite the problems that chicken owners will have to face, they are worth it!
