Why Design Websites in WordPress?

WordPress was first introduced to the Internet in 2003. It grew out of b2/cafelog, designed by Michel Valdrighi in 2001. It was conceived to improve the layout and readability of content created frequently and frequently. It started with less than 10 users, but has since grown to become the largest self-hosted blogging platform in the world. So why is it also used as a CMS managing literally millions of full-fledged websites offering much more than just blogging?

As a blogging tool, WordPress is/was dominant and still is. However, as a website management tool, it surpasses many of the more mundane requirements of a website in the early 2010s.

Take for example the templates or theming of a WordPress website. The tool has become so popular that there are literally thousands of free themes available for a Web designer use or modify to create a unique theme suitable for a client. But this, arguably, is available for many CMS, such as Joomla. It is, but theming a WordPress site makes a lot more sense than many other CMS offerings.

So what, any web designer worth their salt should be able to design a theme for many of the more popular open source CMS platforms. That’s true, but it’s the combination of this simple process and the many other attributes of WordPress that make a compelling case for using it as a website CMS.

The fact that the hosting requirements are so easy to meet, the admin area is so intuitive, the sites run fast, and that there is a huge following of passionate and knowledgeable community members who often provide answers to sticky questions almost instantly, reduces so much design and development time that costs can be kept to a minimum.

Websites that are built on the open source WordPress platform are extremely easy to embed into amazingly sophisticated website management tools. Take e-commerce for example; There are numerous eCommerce plugins for the WordPress platform. Each of these plugins has its advantages and limitations, but it lowers the entry-level skill level of a web designer/builder to such a level that almost no coding skills are required.

Of course, reducing the level of coding required for the web designer is good in one way, but it also creates problems down the road. Where will future programmers come from? Should we worry about the lack of coding skills? Maybe, but then again, this reduction in work benefits both the client and the designer, as time is money, and reducing time inevitably reduces costs for the website as well.

Even complex eCommerce and CRM sites can be built using WordPress, but this is where the level of custom integration starts to build. Many websites require secure transactions, multiple customer emails, inventory or file management systems, and so on and so forth. WordPress and its plugin structure work very well in this environment, but like all large sites built on modular frameworks, it’s important not to overload the server with unnecessary load. Now the web site designer, its programmers and its site architects come to the fore in the design and implementation process.

WordPress can become slower than it should be if the website is overloaded with multiple plugins or even worse plugins that crash or even stop working under certain circumstances. A classic problem often encountered by even the best web design team is the conflict between multiple code scripts included in the website as a result of lazy plugin writing. Loading multiple versions of the jquery library, for example, is one surefire way to break a page or its functionality.

Given that WordPress offers a powerful and inventive environment in which to build sites, it is currently the best choice when it comes to which CMS to use. As a website building tool, it has natural qualities that allow for quick and cheap website building, but does the client need to know what you’re doing?

Selling a client a website that sings and dances and claims it was created by you is fine, but not entirely true. Some designers even go so far as to remove any reference to WordPress or the theme designer (if used) and create a white label CMS that they then re-label as their own. Again, this isn’t exactly ethical, but as long as the designers keep it right, it’s not a problem.

The maintenance issue, for both the white label designer and the less skilled website builder, is one of security, maintenance and updates. WordPress is updated frequently both for security reasons and to include the latest and greatest new gizmos. White label products and to some extent other designers tend to build and forget their sites and their customers. Many clients will not pay for ongoing maintenance of their site because they do not feel the need for it. Is there a solution to this? Well, of course. Forcing the client to participate in a maintenance contract should solve this problem, but if the designer wants the contract, it may be the first option the client declines.

The solution is proper training. This is where WordPress is pretty much at its best. It has the most intuitive and simple admin area of the current crop of CMS/blog platforms. Teaching a new client how to curate and add and edit their own content is ridiculously simple. there are a huge number of video and website resources explaining all the simple and slightly more complicated procedures. While a web designer encourages and simplifies the learning process, there’s no reason why a new website owner can’t maintain their new WordPress site long into the future.

WordPress comes out on top for so many reasons when deciding, as a designer, what platform to build a new website on. But if there’s one thing to remember, it’s that the website belongs to the customer. This is their site and as such they should have the easiest and simplest CMS to use. WordPress was designed from the ground up to be this simple CMS and is therefore a perfect platform for new websites to be considered an early 21st century CMS.
