Runtime Error 482 (Printform Error) Windows 10 – 5 Steps To Resolve Windows 10 Printer Code 482

Runtime error 482 is caused by the system’s inability to connect to the Windows “Printform” library from applications that still use the VBA (Visual Basic) integration engine.

Although the error appears on Windows 10, it is usually when using Adobe Acrobat or another Print to PDF application.

The solution to Runtime Error 482 is to first make sure you have the appropriate printer installed (most don’t) and then – if the error persists – change/remove all references to the printer setting from all VBA applications.

If you see the error when you try to “Print to PDF”, you need to make sure that you have the correct PDF drivers installed and that the application you are using is compatible with Windows 10.

The steps outlined in this tutorial should explain how to fix it…

reason

The main problem with runtime error 428 comes from the way Windows works with its underlying hardware.

When you use Windows, there are a number of “subsystems” that allow the system to connect to a number of peripherals and other devices. These subsystems are called “drivers” and need other software to interface with them.

The case with this error is that the hardware you are trying to connect to your system is not responding, you will get an error like 428. Now, while the error was quite common (and still is for Windows 10) – most people are not aware of the cause of the problem and that it was actually caused by the Visual Basic runtime – a series of different files / applications designed to connect applications to deeper Windows processes.

Visual Basic is now an ancient technology, but it is still used by the likes of Excel and a number of third-party applications (including Citrix and Adobe Acrobat) to provide built-in functionality for a system. It is this integration that is corrupted and broken on your computer (causing the error to appear). When you try to use your system’s “printer”, the problem is that the application you’re using will basically be using either an outdated or broken version of the VBA Printform engine, causing the error to appear.

The fix is to make sure your printer is installed – and working – correctly, and then that there are no underlying problems with your system.

Answer

Although Microsoft recommends using the SFC (System File Checker) and DISM (Service and Deployment Image Management) tools to resolve any major issues with the system itself – the problem may be a little more acute/easier to deal with than that.

We’ve found that VBA is often the problem, and updating either the application in question – either the main application or the various VC++ redistributables – resolves the problem.

This is how…

1. Reinstall the printer

The first step is to reinstall the printer on your system.

This may sound drastic, but it’s actually a very good way to resolve most “printer” errors – usually due to the way printer drivers can sometimes become corrupted or damaged.

To do this, you should use the following steps:

  • Right-click the Start button (bottom left screen)

  • Select “Device Manager”

  • Scroll down to “Printers”

  • Right-click one of the printers causing the problem

  • Select “Uninstall”

  • Follow the steps on the screen

  • Restart your computer

After restarting, Windows 10 should automatically start adding the printer again.

To check this – you can use the following steps:

  • Left click on the Start button (bottom left screen)

  • From the left menu “charms” select “cog” (this is for the “settings” applet)

  • Click on “Devices” (top row)

  • From the left menu, select “Printers and Scanners”

  • If the printer does not appear, select “Add a printer or scanner”

  • Follow the steps on the screen

Let this process happen and then try printing with it again. If the error is not resolved or your printer is not listed, proceed to the next step.

2. Clean the printer spooler

The next problem could be that the “print spooler” was causing problems.

The print spooler is basically a queue through which Windows can manage the various print jobs. Anyone familiar with Windows 95 / 98 will probably remember the joy of dealing with a constantly crashing print spooler.

To solve one of the most common reasons why the Runtime 482 error appears, you need to clear the print spooler:

  • Press the “Windows” + “S” keys on the keyboard
  • In the search box, type “CMD”, right-click and select “Run as administrator”
  • Type: net stop spooler and then press Enter
  • Type (note the spaces): DEL /F /S /Q %systemroot%System32spoolPRINTERS and then press Enter
  • Type: net start spooler and then press Enter

This will restart the spooler after it has cleared any underlying queues/pools that may have existed on the system.

3. Reinstall the affected software

A number of people have reported the error occurring when using Adobe Acrobat as well as a number of other tools.

You should reinstall any affected software because, firstly, there may be updates available, and secondly, there may be some major compatibility issues or such.

To do this (if you don’t already know) is relatively easy:

  • Right-click the Start button (bottom left of the taskbar)
  • Select “Apps & Features”
  • From the list, select the application that is causing the errors
  • Select “Uninstall”
  • Let the process continue
  • Restart your computer
  • Reinstall the software (preferably download the latest version from the Internet)

If you’re an experienced computer user, you’ve probably already tried this. If not, it should at least ensure that the app causing the error is running as up-to-date as possible.

4. Reinstall .NET & VC++

If the above doesn’t work, it *could* be that some of Windows’ core dependencies (software libraries it uses to run) are either broken, damaged, or out of date.

There are two systems that are best suited here – .NET or Visual C++ (VC++). Reinstalling both gives you a chance to make sure your system can use the files/settings it needs to run properly…

  • Press the “Windows” + “S” keys on the keyboard
  • In the “Search” field, type “Control Panel”
  • Scroll to “Programs and Features”
  • Look for “Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable” listings.
  • From the list, write down the “year” number for each of the versions you have installed (for example, “2012”), as well as the “architecture” version (x86 / x64)
  • Right-click on each and select “Uninstall”

Once you’ve uninstalled them all (don’t worry, it won’t harm your system, although it will probably stop a number of apps until they’re reinstalled), browse to your chosen search engine and type in “vc++ download”.

The first result should show a Microsoft page showing “Latest supported downloads of Visual C++” – this will give you a full list of the libraries you’ve just removed.

From the list, you need to download each one and reinstall them.

When this is done, you need to click on “Turn Windows features on or off” from the left panel.

There should be several “.NET” listings listed at the top. Click on version 4.7 and make sure it is installed correctly. If it isn’t, we’ll need to install it again:

  • Go to the search engine of your choice
  • Type “.NET Download”
  • This should lead to a “.NET Downloads” page from Microsoft
  • Click it, and then download the latest version of the .NET Framework
  • Save it to your hard drive and let it install on your system

This should ensure that any application using VBA will access the correct files etc.

5. Run SFC/DISM

Finally, you should look into running the SFC/DISM tools.

They won’t fix the error directly, but they will ensure that your system runs as smoothly as possible…

  • Press the “Windows” + “S” keys on the keyboard
  • Type “CMD” and then right-click + select “Run as administrator” in the application that appears
  • When CMD loads, type “SFC /scannow” and press Enter
  • Let the system run (it shouldn’t take long) and it will fix any problems it detects automatically
  • Then type the following: “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” and press “Enter”
  • This should take significantly longer than SFC, but should clear most Windows system issues

If the error persists after doing this, it suggests a more specific problem with your computer. It could be anything from an antivirus program to a specific setting causing problems – the next step would be to either get a technician’s opinion OR get information from the makers of the software causing the problem. In either case, there will be an underlying issue leading to the error being displayed.
