Stained Glass First Aid

Owners of older houses appreciate the beauty of stained glass windows. In some cases, the stained glass windows may have been the emotional “reason” that prompted you to buy your house. But as with so many other aspects of old home ownership, stained glass windows need maintenance and care. Below are some suggestions on how to care for your windows — and how to know when to call in an expert.

The stained glass panel is constructed from 1) individually cut pieces of clear or colored glass or chamfers; 2) held together by a matrix of lead or copper foil. Lead dates back to the Middle Ages and was the traditional method of assembling leaded glass panels. Zinc came to be associated with the prairie projects of Frank Lloyd Wright and his contemporaries. Copper foiling is the method pioneered by Louis Comfort Tiffany and is the preferred method for constructing art glass panels and lampshades with intricate designs. An additional step in the construction of leaded glass panels is the application of cement to fill the space between the glass and the inner surface of the lead or zinc coating. Cement is applied to the front and back of the panel to weatherproof and add strength to the panel. Large panels should also be supported with saddles or rebars.

Check your windows for age and warping. To assess the condition of lead or zinc packaging, look for telltale signs of metal fatigue and corrosion. Old lead is still functional if the exposed metal surface (flanges) can be lifted and flattened without cracking. The lead, covered with a fine white powder, has oxidized and reached the end of its useful life. The zinc, covered with small white spots, is also worn. Check the metal for cracks near the joints, especially around the edge of the panel. They indicate metal fatigue.

Large or particularly complex glass panels are often reinforced with steel or brass rods. These saddle bars, about 1/8″ thick by ¼” wide, are attached to the edges and cut into the sash to stiffen the window and help support the weight of the panel. Some reinforcing bars are soldered to the backs, while others are attached with twisted copper wires. If the bars have separated from the end, they must be reattached using the original method. Bars that have split the stone will require release by a professional restorer.

If the panel has developed a bulge, measure its depth. A panel that is 1″ or less out of line and not rattling should be professionally inspected, but may not need repair. Panels more than 1½” beyond true need to be removed from the window and professionally flattened and released.

Check the glass. Due to the difficulty of matching some old glass, it is preferable to repair the cracked glass rather than replace it. And not every crack needs to be repaired. If the crack is small and not in danger of falling out, leave it. If the glass is missing or severely cracked, call a professional. If the repairs are minimal and the panel is large, field repair may be possible.

If you need to transport the glass to a professional restorer, start by securing the loose beams and panes with painter’s tape. (Do not use tape!) Remove the sash with the panel still attached. For added security, place the panel on a larger sheet of plywood and glue it down. Smaller panels can be packed and laid flat in a wooden box.

Clean a tough glass panel with lead or copper foil with a soft cloth and a neutral pH soap. Wring the rag well. Avoid abrasive products that can scratch the glass or metal. Do not use spray products or those containing ammonia. Liquid can get under the foil or lead and the ammonia can react with the lead or cement. Bathroom or kitchen windows can be cleaned with a damp #0000 steel wool pad to remove soap scum, grease and mildew. Polish with a paste product such as Glass Wax or stained glass polish available at any stained glass dealer. Use a soft cloth to apply the paste, let dry and polish. CAUTION: This process may release lead dust into the work area. Clean all surfaces around the panel (wings, skirting and floor) with soap and water to contain lead residue. And wear a dust mask.

Protective glazing, while not required, can provide protection to your stained glass window from vandalism or a wayward baseball. To maintain aesthetics, the storm window sash should be of a similar material to the original sash. Depending on local building codes, glazing can be double-glazed or Plexiglas(R). Note that plastic glasses will yellow and scratch over time. Lexan®, which does not yellow, nevertheless scratches very easily. Double strength tempered glass is expensive but offers the best protection.
